Messed up replacing starter solenoid

Messed up replacing starter solenoid
When replacing the starter solenoid in my TroyBilt riding mower, I attached the "green" wire to the 12 volt line. The result was smoke coming from around the flywheel area.
Now, the engine cranks but does not run; its like its not getting a spark. The motor is a B&S ELS500, 18.5hp, model 31Q777-0215-E1.
I've replaced the coil (appeared to have gotten hot) and I'm going to pull the flywheel to see if I can spot anything burned. There are 2 wires coming from under the flywheel - they read open. Also neither side is shorted to ground.
Since I do not have a wiring diagram, is there anything I need to be looking for (other than burned components)? Also, what is the gap for the coil?

Is there a such thing as a wiring diagram for this engine or am I going to have to dig my way thru the engine looking for and replacing bad components.
For example, what sort of electronics is under the flywheel?

There are no electronics under the flywheel that will keep the engine from starting. If you have a new coil on, have it gapped properly, and have it on right-side-up, then you probably fixed the source of the smoke you saw.

Thanks for all responses. I removed the flywheel and found that the stator and diode were OK so I started to look at the starter solenoid that I replaced.
Evidently I've hooked up something wrong because my battry was drained to 2.5 volts.
I noticed that when I hooked up the battery, the solenoid under the fuel bowl was clicking. I think that drained my battery (not the key was in the off position).
I cannot find a chassis wiring diagram so I'm still trying to figure out the wiring at the starter solenoid.
In short, I have a wiring harness going from the battery/solenoid area. there are 5 wires in that harness; Red from solenoid to starter; red/white stripe for the starter solenoid tab, red from the battery; and 2 green wires. One green wire goes to a 20 amp fuse, then to the battery negative side. The other green wire...thats the wire that I messed up. Where does that go?
Also, why fuse the battery ground?

The fused wire is not supposed to go to ground I'm sure. The other green wire may be the one that goes to a ground bolt that bolts the solenoid on.

Well, I replaced the 20 amp fuse for the instrument panel and also found one under the seat for look like it was fusing the ground lead. It was bad so I replaced it.
Now I can get the motor to crank but it will not run. I've put in a new plug and have pulled it to check that I'm getting a spark.
I'm assuming that I'm getting gas since I see the vapor coming out of the carb (the air filter is removed). Is there anything else I should be looking for? It does have oil but how does the low oil sensor work (if its electric, maybe I fried that also). Could that be the problem?
This is getting frustrating and the grass keeps growing.

Since you have the air cleaner off, spray a shot of carb. cleaner (not starting fluid spray) into the carb. and try firing it up. If it starts, then you'll know where to look.
