Honda mower will not start hrb215k4sda
All, I picked up a cheap mower and am trying to revive it. I'm hoping you can please give me some helpful tips. This is a Honda HRB215K4SDA, which means it's a self-propelled 3-speed gear drive lawn mower, originally set up as a bagger, about 10 years old. It's missing its muffler :-(. First question: is there any obvious way to tell if the engine is shot or has a bent crankshaft? It does not seem to leak oil and the hub on the bottom turns smoothly. Anyhow I topped up the oil and added fresh gas but it will not start. I squirted lots of engine starter and got it to fire a few times, which I think means I'm getting spark. Second question: will it run (loudly) without a muffler? I removed the gas tank and air cleaner housing, the carb then slid back and forth on its bolts but I didn't remove the stiff wires (rods?) connecting the fuel shut-off and choke controls to other pieceparts. Last question: is it ok to just bend back the ends of the wires so the carb comes off? If I can get it off I'll fire up the air compressor to blow things out and maybe get somewhere. Thanks in advance!

Yes, it will run without the muffler. No, don't bend the linkages. If you can't slide the carb off the studs with the linkages attached, put both nuts on one of the studs, jam them together, and use them to back the stud out of the engine, then repeat on the other stud to remove it. Sounds like the carb needs a good cleaning. I suggest using carb cleaner before the air compressor.

It starts now!
Hey cheese, thanks so much for the reply. I pulled off the carb very carefully and found that the linkages either had enough play or came out when I had the carb far enough away from the engine body. I did not have to remove the long studs from the engine body.
With the carb in my hand, I removed the central bolt holding the brass bowl onto the carb body. Found that the pipe up into the carb body was definitely plugged. Applied a bit of love with gumout and the air compressor, and that cleared out the very small pipe. What's the right word for this? Managed not to blow away the o-ring somehow. How do I know if the float is good or bad?
After I put everything back together the mower started! Sure was loud with no muffler :-) Thanks again for the help.
