Rider "Gear" Shift Problem

What could be some reasons why a riding mower wont shift good anymore?? It is a belt type mower or transmission.

mine is a 18 year old 41" snapper-with hydraulic trans.
a change of the fluid helped alot

I don't know,, Does it have a vari-speed pulley,, Do you have a make,, A Model or a seriel # that could help the pros??? Maybe time for new belts,, but if we don't know what you have, It's all a guess....
