craftsman transaxle leak

I have a 46" craftsman w/kohler 16.5 hp
Hydrostatic Drive Trans axle
Model 917.272021
Sears is of no info except for service call or new part
That has a oil leak at transaxle,
At axle tube on right side. near where axle comes out of Transaxle housing.
It is the end of housing(not a axle seal)
I would say the sealant is gone bad where the housing halfs go together!
I'M asking if anyone knows of the type of fluid or fluids needed for refilling the transaxle andaxle tubes?
Do I need to make my own fill and drain plugs?
I'M hoping to fix before transaxle goes out. as it works fine now...
THANKS FOR THE HELP

Hello glamis,

You have a Hydro Gear 310-0650 transaxle in your unit, The cover page for the manual list your unit number. I don't understand why they don't state your number in the below text, But that is what I would go by.

Good Luck

HI 31YTECH,
Thanks so much for the help.
So just good 20-50 oil is all.
That is what it fell like too!
Can I get to oil lever hole without pulling out of mower?
without going through purging just to check for now.
Will pull unit out in fall or winter when I can repair leak.
Thanks for the quick responce tonight .......

Some you can and some you can't, I don't recall on your machine because I work on too many different ones.

That's why they say to purge and re-check oil level before re-assembly back into the machine, All I can say is look around.

There will be a plastic vent type cap screwed into this oil level check hole, Be careful removing it as they get brittle over time causing the threads to break off in the case.

Good Luck

Have used tractor for mowing and hauling a garden trailer.
They saw to run in forward and reverse with wheels disengaged first than engaged 3 times.
Manual say yes I have a 650 transaxle.
Is it a good unit?
I see vent in part pic incase I need a new one.
I will be carefull,I work on cars for my living too!
Will try to do today.
I will keep you posted.
THANKS AGAIN.......JACK
