Got a problem with older Craftsman rider brakes
I've gotten a older Craftsman rider (model - 917.271631 - LT1000) in and got the starting problem solved but when I took it out for a spin, I found the brakes weren't working. So I pulled the brake off and replaced the brake pads. Then while I had it jacked up, I spun the rear wheels and the brake shaft did not turn. I tried to turn the brake shaft and it would turn back and forth a small amount. If I disassemble the transaxle, what do I need to look for? Or does the rider have to be on the ground so that both wheels turn the same direction?

Both wheels have to be turning the same direction for the brake rotor to turn. Are the round pins in the brake caliper free to move? They are often rusted in place and can do nothing.

Thanks Cheese, that's what I wanted to hear. The pins were free to move. Could you explain in a little more detail why the wheels have to be turning in the same direction?

Because turning only one wheel just makes the other turn the opposite direction though the differential gears, and never turns the main gear which in turn drives the idler shaft that the brake is mounted on.
