95 Craftsman wont start

My mower wonít start. It ran like a charm the last time I used it. I re-charged battery just in case but that didnít help and the engine moves free (can turn by hand). When I turn the key, I get nothing - no sound (click etc.) and it doesnít turn over. I accidently left the mower deck lever engaged and it sat that way for a week. I looked at the safety shut off on the seat and that moves freely and the clutch/brake pedal is moving freely as well. At the beginning of the summer I cleaned the carb and it has been starting like a charm all summer so I'm stumped. I'm not very good with engines but learn quickly - any thoughts a "trouble shooting list"? i.e. What to check 1st, 2nd, etc.

Try pulling the lever all the way down. If that doesn't do it, the switch this lever activates would be a good place to start.
