Cub 2160 starter bad?

I was mowing with my mid-1990s Cub 2160 lawn tractor when it died. Acted like it was out of gas, but when I checked it did have gas. I went to start it and it sounded like the starter was spinning but not engaging the engine.

Any ideas what's going on? I've run through more than a few starters on this tractor but this sound is new to me. Could it be something other than the starter?

Help!

Doc,

Sounds like the plastic starter drive gear has completely stripped or split and dropped off, I would suggest starter removal and check the gear.

Good Luck

question...

I have one of these mid-90's Cubs also a 2135... Can you give me an idea of what these starters run? I only have 400 hrs on mine but have never had any problems.
Thanks,
