It's a Devilbiss Tuffy model NOV 501. As soon as I plugged it in, it went dead in a spit second. Worked fine the day before. It was a hot humid day today.
I really need to get this thing working. It's the kind without the tank.

Did it blow the breaker on the circuit you plugged it into when it stopped? Also if this unit has an oil sump be sure it has oil in it. Sorta sounds like the motor may have burned up in it and if so it's probably time to find a new compressor.

Is this compressor a vertically oriented, oilless, continuously running unit, that is without a pressure switch?
If so the wire should go directly into the motor.
You would need to carefully check with a meter that there is voltage at the plug as suggested and then inside at the motor connections.
If there is then you do have a problem with the motor.
Your unit appears to be pretty old and if you want more help some clear close up pics would help.
Just post them on a free site like PhotoBucket and provide a link.
