Troy built generator leaking gas form crank case
We have a Troy built 5550 generator model 01919 that my husband just found in a puddle of gas. It's about 5 years old and only needed a few times a year, but run periodically as a precaution. When he went to check the oil, gas comes pouring out unless the gas is shut off.
Can you tell us what happened and how to fix? Any help is appreciated.

That's a common problem with engines that are not used often enough. Gas can varnish up gumming the carb. I can usually fix it by giving the carb a cleaning. There is probably a bowl on the bottom of the carburetor. Inside there is a float that pushes against a needle valve. to keep the gas at a certain level. If the float or needle valve stick in the up position no gas gets to the engine. If it sticks in the down position fuel flows continuously and you get a puddle.
When removing and disassembling the carb. carefully note the position of EVERYTHING. Take pictures if needed. It's really not a bad job and can be quite rewarding when you fix it yourself.
