honda portable generator: two problems

have a honda EM3500SX generator, its about 9 yrs. old.

two problems:

1. unit starts fine however, after a while it starts to run rough and the only way to fix it is to pull the choke out. then the motor smooths out.

2. the unit will cut off if i switch "on" the Auto Throttle swich.

i have:

--checked sediment bowl and screen

-- sprayed carb. cleaner down the carb after removing air filter.

---changed oil

any idea on these problems, we are located near annapolis, md.

Your carb is partially clogged. You'll need to clean it properly.

The fuel cap could be partially clogged and not venting properly, try running it with the cap loose to see if that is the problem. Have a good one. Geo

The auto throttle switch powers a solenoid which when the plunger is retracted pulls the throttle plate back to idle. The plunger may be pulling the throttle rod back to far. Look for an adjustment cam, screw or stop that will let you adjust the idle a little higher. This could also be related to your fuel problem. Most generators w/o auto voltage control need to be adjusted to 3750 no load speed to allow for governor droop at rated generator load.
