Ariens/Tecumseh electric start snowblower

My 7 year old Ariens Sno-Thro with a Techumseh engine starts and runs fine, but the electric starter suddenly fails to engage the engine. The electric starter motor runs fine but doesn't engage the engine to start it. It just runs "free". Could it have ironically frozen in the cold weather? Otherwise, it starts with the recoil just fine.

It's in the bendix. That could either be the drive for the drive gear is stripped, in which case you should hear a lot of noise as the gear engages the flywheel, but the drive strips. Or the drive isn't moving up the spiraled shaft of the starter to engage the flywheel. It's a little more likely to be the latter, but either is possible.

Pull the starter and run it off the engine. You can see if the drive is moving up the shaft. When it has you'll see the spirals in shaft. You can lube those up with a penetrant/lubricant.

Hopefully that's all that's wrong with it.

Thanks. I'll give that a try. Happy Holidays.
