older ariens snowblower 7hp engine will not go into forward gears. it will go reverse. it has linkage underneath that goes left to right, it only goes right. please help or advise thanks, dan

That part of the mechanism that slides on a shaft, might just need a shmere of grease or a drop of oil, careful, do not get any on the rubber disc or the drive plate. As you try to move the speed assembly left and right, or back and forth, try to see if anything is banging into each other or otherwise binding. It's a fairly simple device, and it should be easy to figure out.

I'm sorry, I did'nt answer the question, Usualy the motor is attched to the steel plate and the rubber disc is attched to the gears,sprokets, and the wheels.
