clean gas cap vent?

My snowblower ran awhile then stalled then stopped. I read I should try opening the gas tank cap half a turn or so and try it then, that maybe the cap wasn't venting (plugged or clogged?). Sure enough, by doing that it resolved the issue. The cap is this type: http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/b...1/IMG_1529.jpg
So what is the method for cleaning/clearing these? What do they get clogged with anyway? Looks to me (from outside appearance) there would have to be quite a chunk or glob of stuff in there to clog it??

I blow through them with compressed air from the compressor and if that doesn't do it, I replace the cap.

Maybe a little of the powdery snow I was snowblowing accumulated on the tank around the bottom edge of the cap while I was operating the machine? I noticed a little dusting of it on there, maybe that's all it was? Just enough to affect proper venting?
