Briggs 12 HP Oil in carb

Engine runs great a couple of minutes, but chokes down as oil shoots into carb. I changed the diaphragm (Valve cover) that connects to carb with a rubber tube. It ran great for a couple of minutes and then the oil blew back into carb. What could cause this?

Is the oil level overfull, and/or does the oil smell like gas?

Oil level is OK. Does not smell like gas. Found model no:289707.
The only way I can see that oil can get into the carb is through the tube that connects to the carb from the valve cover (diaphragm). That's what I changed. Why would it blow out again?

Over-speeding of the engine, an open hole (like the dipstick out or dipstick o-ring missing) or excessive crankcase pressure (blowby from bad rings) would be the only realistic reasons.

The o-ring you are refering to is on the cap of the dipstick or at the bottom where the dipstick housing connects to the fill/drain pipe?
There is no ring blow-by that is visible. It is a low-hour solid engine. Just not run in a couple of years.

Apologies!!! Apologies!!!

I went back to shop and re-checked everything and (with my reading glasses on) found that I had read the dipstick incorrectly. It was about a pint over-full. I drained it down to the "full" mark and it is fine. Runs great!!!

Thanks, Cheese.
Without your help, I would not have thought about the over-fill issue.

Have a great day,
Will Walker
