sears mower won't start

sears model # 917-376290 6hp. self propelled.
When I pull the cord it starts but dies right off.
eng. model # 143.966010

This mower has a bulb type primer on it doesn't it? What appears to be happening is that the initial prime is running out and not being replaced by fuel from the tank. Thus the engine cannot continue running.

Sounds like you have a fuel clog somewhere. Is this the first time you've tried to run it since last fall?

Probably has a clogged carburetor. Remove the bowl and clean the bowl and holes in the bowl nut and see if that helps.

Yes, it does have the primer bulb. When I push it many times it will start but then die.
I should check all the lines to do with the gas? Also the bowl?
I will as soon as it stops snowing here..... April 1. 11" of the stuff, April 2. 2" today who knows....

Yes and yes. Check holes in bowl nut like Cheese suggested. My bet is on a carb clog.

The bowl nut(main jet) can have from 0 to 4 holes, there are several styles, the tiny hole near the top is usually the problem and is nearly invisible on some, I use the wire from a twist tie to clean it. The pic below is for reference only. Have a good one. Geo

WOW,,,, I never knew that had holes in it..... When I can get to my shed I will check everthing... Atleast today is rain, no more snow...

Briggs 12 hp engine troubleshooting

Hi All, I bought an older MTD riding mower with a briggs 12 hp engine. It ran, but needed a tune up. One minute it would act like it was surging, then act like it was missing out. So I started with the basics. New air cleaner, plug, gas, gas line and filter. Took the carb off and soaked it for 30 minutes in carb cleaner. Blew out all the parts and passages with air nozzle. Float and needle are in good condition. So reassembled carb. Set both scews out 1 1/2 turns from seated. It stared right up and ran smooth at idle. Half throttle it started popping just a little. Full throttle and still more popping from the muffler. Tried tuning it in with the high speed screw on the bottom of the carb. No matter which way I turned it, not much difference until it would start to bog down. Still one minute it acts like it is surging and the next acts like it is missing out. Popping from the muffler is the most noticeable. When I bring it back down to idle after running at full throttle, it surges bad. Can it be the valves? How are they adjusted on this engine? Hi, I just picked up a craftsman Snow Blower with a 9hp, Model LH318-156569 engine... the guy I bought it from said the engine was "frozen"... I tried the pull starter and it didn't budge (bought it anyway, great price)... once home, I removed the starter cord assembly and plastic belt cover... just to see if I could, I used a 14" ratchet on the nut holding pulley to the end of the crankshaft... to my surprise, without "herni-a-ting" myself, I got the crankshaft to spin!... I spun it clockwise a couple of times with the ratchet, then i used the electric start briefly to see if it would spin as well, and it did... I went back to the ratchet and it felt stuck again (exactly like the first time)... I gave it a the same effort and I was able to get it to spin... one last time, I used the electric starter (just about 2 seconds) and it spun but I noticed a rather loud rattling sound inside the engine, a sound I'd never heard before from a small engine. QUESTIONS; what's my next move to repair this engine (or getting ready to run)?... what's the relationship, if any, between the sometime "stuck" crankshaft and the rattle I heard? What would you do?
