What does this line do?

Hello, I have a Speedaire 3Z495 air compressor with a line that goes from the cylinder head to the crankcase that someone cut and crimped, but I reconnected. What does this line do? Does it need a check valve? Please help!

Looks like an unloader for the pump, but that wouldn't be connected to the crankcase, it would be connected to a pressure valve on the tank.

Does it help with the lubrication? The air is what moves the oil instead of a splasher or pump?
