Honda GX390 cranking problem

I have a Honda GX390 13hp engine connected to a pressure washer pump. When attempting to crank the engine with the pull rope it is very difficult and most of the time the rope handle is, or nearly is, jerked out of my hand. I think my arm is a little longer from repeated attempts at cranking the engine. Removing the spark plug allows the engine crankshaft and pressure washer pump to rotate freely. Is there a compression release valve on this engine that may be sticking? Any other ideas would be helpful. Thanks!

Sounds like there is oil or gas in the cylinder. Is the spark plug wet with gas or oil? Was it stored other than right side up?

no oil or gas in cylinder. engine was stored properly but it has been about a year since last used. i have put fresh gas in it and changed the oil. engine probably has less than 50 hours on it.

Try starting it with the wand trigger pulled. I have a pressure washer with the same engine and it does the same for me sometimes if the unloader valve doesn't kick in and relieve some pressure.
