Craftsman tractor won't start

I have an 18 hp craftsman garden tractor with a kohler engine/electronic start. it has been idle for several monts. when i tried to start it, the engine turned slowly but stopped. At first i thougth the battery was low, so i charged it. i know it has power as the lights come on brightly. However, all i get when i turn the key is a click but no engine movement. Any suggestions on how to start an engine that has been idle for a long time?

Locate the starter relay and try jumpering past it to see if it will crank. I've replaced the starter relay on more than one lawn tractor and if yours is like the one on my mower, it's pretty cheaply constructed.

Use penetrating oil in the cylendars. Also, jumped from car battery to starter and eventually was able to get it to turn over and start! Still won't start on its own, so it may yet be the battery or selenoid.

Kinda sounds like the starter is bad but knowing what engine you have would help.
