Engine runs backwards?

What would make an engine run backwards? This Tecumseh engine...I prime the carburetor, and give a tug on the rope, and the engine about rips my arm off. What is going on? Mike K.

If this is a mower engine you must have the blade installed. But most likely the flywheel key is sheared making the timing off firing the spark too soon and thus the kick back.

+1 you'll shear the key by trying to run with no blade and then even with blade on you'll get that kick. been there, done that.
