Question 25 HP Kohler 730S-0017 under a load

Could someone explain to me what happens mechanically when my lawn tractor is under load? By what process is the engine kept at the same RPM?

I would appreciate any and all help.

I'm trying to diagnose why black smoke pours out under a heavy load.

The centrifugal flyweights on the governor fall in, allowing the governor tension spring to pull the throttle a bit harder and allow the engine to consume more gas to maintain rpm. If you are getting black smoke, you are getting too much fuel. This is not a governor problem, but rather a carburetor problem or possibly a clogged or bad air filter. Could also be that the choke is not releasing.

Something is weird because I had the carb rebuilt by someone I trust (I have the old parts) and the condition still exists. The air filter is new as well. ???
