Toro 20018 cylinder head gasket

Can someone help me understand some basic operation of my Toro 20018 (Tecumseh motor.) The cylinder head gasket is torn/broken. I'm guessing that has something to do with why my engine won't start. Is that a correct assumption? If so, can someone explain why? If its a wrong assumption, can someone explain what the effect will be from a torn (broken) cylinder head gasket?

Thanks,
Glenn

The head gasket is what seals the air/fuel mixture in while the piston compresses it for ignition. If it is blown, the compressed mixture blows out and there is little left for combustion... possibly not enough for the engine to start.
