honda HR 215 Starter rope broke

My starter pull rope on my Honda HR 215 broke, I replaced the rope but I can't get the recoil to pull it back! What am I doing wrong?

take it off as well as the rope. you need to turn it 5-10 revolutions in the direction that the spring is tightening in (so it gets harder to turn each time) and then put the string in through the hole and tie it off. the extra revolutions are so there is tension to bring the rope back. think of it like this. two revolutions more than the revolutions that the string pulls out.

Actually, the rope pulls more than 2 revolutions, but that is correct... the spool needs to be pre-wound before attaching the rope so that it will wind it up into the recoil housing. Wind it up the way it would turn when you pull the rope until it stops, then back it up until the hole for the rope lines up with the hole in the housing, then feed the rope through and tie it on.
