Troy bilt lawn mower cord yanks back violently

I have a Troy Bilt Briggs Straton 650 series push mower. Battery starter won't start it. After priming and pulling cord it tries to start and after few pulls violently yanks cord from hand. Body building brother can start it because it doesn't pull out of his hand. New spark plug and fuel. Removed carb bowl, no water or debris and carb is getting fuel. Any idea how to fix? Thank you.

If the engine is trying to jerk the cord out of your hand, the most obvious answer is you have a partially sheared flywheel key which puts the timing off or you are trying to start it without a blade. Have a good one. Geo

Any small parts engine shop will have it, just give them the numbers from the engine usually found stamped in the metal engine shroud just above the spark plug, they will be Model, Type and Code. You must remove the flywheel to check if the old one is bad, just looking down at it is not good enough, they can look good from the top and still be sheared below. Have a good one. Geo
