5hp B&S speed too high, hunts

I have a B&S 5hp motor on a 13 yo Yard machine. Thing has been awesom, always cranks on first pull. But over the past four weeks, it seems to run at very high rpm, and the rpms seem to surge. I used to be able to mow both yards on a tank of gas, but now can do just the front yard an a we bit more in the back. Anyone know what's wrong, and how to adjust it?

Can't provide model number, but it has the carb with the priming bulb on the side.

TIA

Model number, type and code are usually stamped in the metal engine shroud just above the spark plug. Have a good one. Geo
