Craftsman Kohler 25 hp turns but wont start
I have a craftsman gt 5000 (model# 917.276351) that i had not started in about a year. so before i attempted to turn it on i changed the oil, the air filter, both spark plugs, put new gas... it turns but will not start.... any advice would be appreciated.

I moved your post to it's own thread instead of tacked on to a 5 year old thread.

It does have spark and i got it to turn on for a few seconds after i took of the air filter to access the carburetor and i drained the gas line to make sure gas was flowing and it was.... when i went to turn it on again it spit gas from the carburetor and had gas over flowing out of it dried it up and tried again and got a back fire from te carburetor and it flooded again.

Yes the the oil i just changed does smell like gas, what does that mean?
How do i clean the carburetor and what do i use to clean it?

It means the carb is leaking and needs cleaning at the least. Take it apart and use spray carb cleaner from an auto parts store to clean it. The float needle may need to be changed as well.

Mine did the exact same thing. Taking out the plugs and cleaning them, ensuring the air filter is clean, installed a $3.00 fuel filter and still no start.... One little spray of starting fluid and it fired right up, no more problems. I guess it just needed motivation

You'll know the needle needs changing if it looks like it is corroded or deformed at the tip, or leaks again after cleaning everything.
