reinstalling flywheel and pull start on Tecumseh HM80

Having trouble reinstalling flywheel and pull start assembly on my HM80( from roto tiller). It is as though the flywheel shaft has shrunk ( I had to hit it pretty hard to get it loose to start with). Now the " dogs " on the pull start won't engage the housing that drives the flywheel shaft. The shaft appears to have shrunk. How do I fix this, do I have to take the engine apart or beat on the back of the flywheel to make the shaft come out further????? Help????

Don't beat on anything. Have you aligned the flywheel slot with the key/slot on the crankshaft? If so, once the nut on the shaft is tightened it should all fit back together.

Marbobj is correct...NO BEATING!! If the nut starts onto the shaft and everything is lined up correctly, tightening the nut to the proper torque should pull the crank back up to the proper height.
That said if you beat the shaft too far down for the nut to start, then yes you will have to take the engine apart and fix whatever broke when you beat it!
