Husgvarna YTH 20K46, Kohler courage20 engine starting problem

husgvarna YTH20K46 model 96045004, with a Kohler Courage 20 model SV600S (2007). Son left the key on the on position and drained the battery. Trying to jump start it, I get a click, and sometimes I get a low high pitched sound, and if I hold the key smoke comes from the starter. Is this a sign of a bad starter? Thanks for any help!!

I've done 2 things- 1) hooked up the jumper cables to a good bat, grounded the neg and touched the pos to the starter. All I got were sparks. 2) I bridged the two posts on the solenoid and all i got were sparks and the same click as if i were turning the key. Im assuming the starter is bad.

If the starter worked fine before the battery was drained and then you held the key until it smoked, yes you may have a bad starter. I suspect murder.

Can you turn the engine by hand? It may be hydro-locked with gas.
