All,
I am trying to get at the gearbox on mt auger. The impeller spins but the auger will not spin. Well, it will spin, but I have to kick it etc. If I hammer the gearbox a bit, the auger will move with the impeller.

I need to getinto that gearbox. The only way to do that is get the auger off the AUger shaft. I can open up thr gear box unless I remove at least on auger.

The Snowthrower is quite old. I took off the sheer pin, broke it actually, then drilled it out. I cant move the auger off the shaft.

Any ideas on how to get this off. I tried wd40, lol, and also heated it with a torch. Why is it so difficult to get off?

Oxy-acetylene and a press! You do have the auger assembly out of the housing already, right? Or, worst case, cut the auger shaft and then put it in a press with heat - you'll have to replace the costly shaft and possibly one or both REALLY COSTLY collectors.

 

Try rapping around the part of the auger shaft where the gear box shaft is [inside]. Go around a few times. Rapping actually will expand the outer tube that is the middle of the auger structure. Between the hitting, trying to rotate it and a LITTLE heat, some penatrating oil, you should be able to get off. When you do get it off, before you put it back, put some grease on the shafts so they will spin freely when the shear pins break. That may be the reason the gears failed, or maybe lack of gear oil. Usually the older machines are worth repairing,mine is 45 years old,good luck.
