Lawn tractor problem

have a Sears Craftsman lawn tractor, 5yrs old. runs well, but when engaging blades engine wants to cut off, like some kind of safety thing maybe but have ignition set to run blades whether forward or reverse driving. deck is not clogged with debris. belts/blades good. whats up with this?

I would check the seat safety switch.

Are you able to drive the mower? IE:let the clutch out without the engine dying?
If so it is not likely the seat switch.
Does your mower have a button to hold to allow mowing in reverse?

Just needs a bigger hammer

yes, I can drive it & it doesn't die when letting out the clutch. It does have a position on the ignition to turn to if you frequently want to cut in reverse. I turned the key in each posiition and when I try to engage the blades it dies.

Sounds like it could be the PTO safety switch. If you can post the model number we can direct you to some diagrams and help you locate it to test.
