2008 MTD Lawn Tractor Only Goes Very Slow

2008 MTD riding mover , model 13A1762F029 484-839. serial number 1A088B70167. Just switched out drive belt which had shredded. After switched belt, mower works , but moves very slowly . In following gear lever to change speeds ( 1 is slow, 10 fast) the lever is attached to a rod near the engine and runs to a piece of metal underneath engine. However, it stops there and is not connected in any way to the transmission. I do not see how it could change speeds. I may be missing a piece. Please let me know what I am missing. Thanks

On these mowers, the lever does not change anything at the transmission, it changes the varidrive pulley position. You need to change both drive belts at the same time or you will have these problems.

And you should only use OEM belts for it to work

and there is a setup procedure to follow after changing the belts.

20HP V twin Any common or known issues for these seizing up? Have on in the shop and it simply does not want to turn over. I was able to get it to turn far enough to verify both pistons are moving up and down. Also pulled the flywheel and all is intact and the engine still does not want to turn with flywheel removed. The crank under the flywheel had about 1/2" of pretty well built up rust and the upper bearing (what is exposed any way) looked fairly well molded up as in much moisture...(Pac NW is common for this white stuff on equipment left out) I have serviced this GT for several years now and it has always been only the usual, belts and mandrels and such. Hello. Recently, I've started working on a chainsaw I had sitting in my shed that hadn't been started in a while. I've replaced the spark plug, fuel line, fuel filter, carb gaskets, and intake gasket and I'm still having trouble getting this thing to run. It starts up but then dies a couple of seconds later. It will only start with the choke completely off. It will not start at on or half-position. Things I've made sure of: spark plug is set at about .23 high and low mixtures screws were turned clockwise and backed out at 1 full turn. (I played with these a little bit.) Fresh fuel/oil mixture Carburetor was cleaned with carb cleaner. I even took out the inlet needle and sprayed cleaner in it. Carb gaskets are genuine Walbro and fit like they are suppose to. (Not sure about intake gasket.) I saw a thread similar to this on already posted on this forum and read through it but couldn't find anything that could pinpoint the problem.
