Transmission hesitates

Craftsman DYT4000 riding mower, 8 years old. When going up hill, the mower bucks at times when going up hill. Just started last year; thought it was the fuel filter, but that didn't solve the problem. Down hill or level ground is no issue. All engine filters are new and mower is tuned up; don't know if there's a transmission filter maybe that I need to change or is it a relief valve problem. I mention relief valve because I hear a slight "psss" sound when it bucks. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Does the engine rpm remain constant when this happens, or does the engine "buck" too?

Some DYT4000 with Peerless transaxles had a problem with the neutral gear between the transaxle and the pump, it would not engage all the way and would jerk evenually grinding out the gear, I replaced it on one I had. Have a good one. Geo
