Craftsman model 917.273070 steering problems

My mower stopped turning to the left so I looked at the parts diagram (http://www.searspartsdirect.com/part...P0106024/00004), inspected the mower and discovered that the steering gear (diagram #35, part #138059 Gear, Sector Steering) had a couple of teeth broken off. I ordered a new one and put it on. It worked for a bit and then it started again, only when trying to turn to the left when going straight. If I turn right I can turn left to get it back to straight but then the gear starts skipping.

So I look some more and I think the issue is the steering support bracket (diagram #19 part# 156011 Support Asm., Steering Vgt). It looks like the lower hole where the steering gear shaft slides through is wallowed out and allows too much play so that the gear skips, but only when turning left for whatever reason.

I know that sears stocks the replacement part, but I have been looking at the mower for a while now and cannot figure out where to get started on removing the support bracket. It looks like there is all sorts of stuff in the way, not to mention trying to get the steering shaft out of there. I did manage to remove the four bolts holding it in place, but I am stuck there.

Please help!!

Well I figured it out. Got an idea from another post and removed the mower deck, which was easier than I expected it to be. That gave me room to maneuver the old steering support bracket out. After closer inspection it definitely needs to be replaced. Will order the parts today.
