Starter bolt stripped out

have a stripped out bolt on the starter 14.5 hp briggs ohv / have a 3/8 tap ( old bolt hole is 5/16 ), would it be possissable to drill it out and retap to 3/8 if so what bit size would be proper for the job. or would it be better to go with a helicoil repair and stay with the 5/16 bolt size .

I would try the helicoil first.

I'll second that suggestion to use the helicoil.
