Briggs intek backfire
Model :286H77 0165 E1, Briggs and Stratton intek, new piston and rings and gaskets, first time starting -ran great even cut a lil grass, next day I tried starting it and all it would do is backfire, checked flywheel key, it's still good. Could carb be causing backfiring ? It was gummed up when I took it apart and cleaned it. Seems at first it wasn't getting and fuel, and it went to start couple times after that it would just backfire

Sure seems like the flywheel key. Especially since it ran fine the day before. Did you pull it off and visually check it? Did you oil or grease the crankshaft where the flywheel fits?

Yes that's what I was thinking also, reason for pulling the flywheel off, ( I had the flywheel key in my hand, looked fine). No I did not oil of grease the crankshalf
Where flywheel fits. Should I ?

No, don't... some people do, thinking then it won't be so hard to pull next time, but that makes the key shear.
Try replacing the plug to be sure, plugs do funny things sometimes. Otherwise, check your valves.

Those clearances are on the high side, but shouldn't cause a backfire problem. Set them to about .005" and they should be fine. Describe the backfiring more. Carb conditions can cause some popping, but major backfiring is normally something else. Check to be sure the kill wire isn't squeezed behind the starter... seen that a few times and it makes one backfire for no apparent reason.

I had the clearance at .005 till it backfired, with the air breather off it backfires thru the carb, with air breather on it backfire thru exhaust almost as if a valve would be stuck or sheared flywheel key .While Turning the engine by hand to set valves, they move in and out as they should.

I looked for pinched kill wire, it wasn't pinched. I reset the air gap. I've noticed the choke wasn't moving freely so I worked it loose. And also clean out carb once more . She fired right up!!! I beleave I will need carb kit ,it's running up and down like its hunting for fuel almost. Thinking rubber tip needle valve worn
