i have a 17hp briggs and stratton yard machienes mower that starts only if the battery is disconnected after each use but if you leave it hooked up it will barely crank next time you go to start it a week later. im not good with electric wireing im thinking some kind of a switch malfunction

An easy way to find a short is to get a test light, disconnect the negative battery cable, and connect the test light between the cable and the terminal on the battery. If it lights, there is a drain. Unplug different possible culprits until the light goes out. When it does, you've narrowed it down.
