flash generator

I have a 1998 Generac Mega 2500 generator with a briggs & stratton engine. it puts out 10 volts on the 120a/c side. tried 'flashing' the generator using an extention cord with 12 volt battery. lost voltage down to 2.5. this is a brushless generator with a new capacitor. any suggestions?

Some I think you don't flash like that. On my Briggs you use a electric drill.

It says plug drill in to gen, put drill in forward if reversible, start gen, then turn drill chuck backwards. This should excite the field.

Note.: It says be careful you don't get your hand caught in the chuck when the gen gets power and the drill starts spinning forward.

10 volts is much more than needed to return the field to full polarity. I think something else is wrong.
