Trying to get an old engine running

Howdy...I just started a little project. My brother dropped off an old rusty craftsman lawn tractor. I began by checking for spark. I tried a few different plugs and looked for spark...none. I wanted to be sure so I held the wire and tested it. There was a slight shock. My question is this:
Is it possible to have a weak spark that would not show a spark when attached to the plug?

If so, how do I go about getting more of a spark?

Yardman (MTD) ym400 trimmer problems

Hello, I have a ym400 trimmer and the last time I used it, the starter rope broke on me when I tried to start it. I found a new rope, wound everything back up, and tested the recoil before putting everything back together. I can pull freely and the rope rewinds itself back up. After putting everything back together, it sometimes sounds like the plastic teeth on the recoil pulley assembly aren't grabbing the flywheel. 1 out of every 7-10 pulls of the rope will pull normally and try to start the engine, all others will sound like the flywheel isn't being engaged. The teeth on the recoil pulley assembly look a little wore down, but honestly the new ones don't look that much better. I never had this issue before the rope broke... Could I have re-assembled this incorrectly? Did I miss a step, or do I just need to replace the Recoil Pulley Assembly as well?Read More

Hello I have this weedeater with a weber wt type carb ( [url]http://wem.walbro.com/distributors/servicemanuals/WTseries.pdf[/url] ). I can't get it to run right anymore, here are some symptoms please advise: On starting: primer does purge air from carb. On open choke it usually runs for a few seconds or so on the first or second pull (I believe this is normal). I then go to start it at half choke with the throttle open per instructions. The engine will run for a while, sometimes up to half a minute sometimes a few seconds, and then die. If I switch to full choke after getting the engine running at half choke it will run for up to 1/2 minute and then die. If I feel the weedeater starting to die at half choke and I switch it to full choke it will run for a bit longer then die out. All of the above is with the throttle open. Sometimes I can release the throttle and the weedeater will idle, other times it just dies. If I open the throttle after having gotten it to idle the weedeater always dies. The weedeater seemed to idle very fast before it had problems, and the early symptoms were that i could weedeat without having to use the throttle, I had to be careful if I did squeeze the throttle because that would typically kill it, although sometimes it would speed up as it was supposed to. I have cleaned the carb, replaced all everything in there with the stuff from the carb kit and checked the spark arrestor/muffler for clogging. I have modified the adjustment screws so that I can turn them, and I can't get it to run long enough to tell any difference between the screw positions.
