New MTD product gas tank problems?
I do work for a rent-to-own company in my area and repair their equipment on site. They called, wanting me to schedule a call to another town and look at a new MTD mower. They said the customer can only fill it halfway and then it overflows. He said there is some kind of baffle or piece in the tank that divides the tank. I haven't seen anything like this before and looking at another new MTD tank, I didn't see anything like that. Have any of you seen this? I hate to ride to another town to look at something that is built the way it's supposed to be. I'm thinking maybe there is a built in baffled off area for the fumes to accumulate and then be burned by the engine the next time? (EPA stuff)

Nope. I haven't been out there to see if yet, so I have no info other than it's a cheap MTD 38" or 42" mower. If I had the model #, I would look up the tank and see for myself.

If it's a rent to own I really question the operator (the person filling the tank). I really hope you are getting paid for the drive out there.
I'm curious to know how the operator knows/thinks the tank is half full yet gas spills out the gas cap. I also wonder if the person is using one of the new CARB compliant gas cans. If the can is held a bit too vertically it may not vent, stopping the flow from the can.

Yeah, I charge for the driving time. I just have a full schedule and didn't want to have to spend the time doing it if there isn't anything wrong. I guess I'll ride out there and see. Who knows, these folks rent some mowers to some really strange people.
