Craftsman Lawn Tractor Model 917.257720 - Steering Problem

I can turn to the right but the gears slip when I turn the left. I replaced the steering shaft assembly and the problem is the same. The wear on the teeth of the old shaft didn't seem too bad and the sector gear doesn't seem to be worn. When turning the steering wheel to the left, it seems that the sector gear moves back just enough to not allow the gears to engage. I also tightened the bolt that goes into the sector gear and still no luck. Any ideas?

Hello TJSoh,

From your description it sounds like you have worn sector bushings #27 shown below, Also make sure there's no excessive wear in bushings #31 and #29 on the shaft.....

Good Luck

Thanks for quick reply 31YTech. Would you suggest that I replace all the bushings and bearings on the shaft? These three parts are about $17? I just don't want to have to take it apart more than once if I can help it.

Yes, I'd replace all while in there.... There's 2 #27's, 1 #31 and 1 #29 totaling 4.....

Good Luck
