John Deere STX 38 not starting

Hi,
I’m having problems starting my John Deere Stx 38 with a Kohler command 12.5 engine (model CV12.5S). Here is what I know:
  • My battery is almost new and registers 12,58V on the meter.
  • I am able to start the engine when the battery is connected to a charger. Sometimes, when connected to the charger it doesn’t start, but when I put the charger on jump start it does.
  • Sometimes the fly wheel turn, but the engine doesn’t start, sometimes nothing moves but I heard a click.
  • When the wire from the ignition module is connected to the spark plug and the spark plug is grounded, I get sparks. This is when the battery is being jump started.
  • My air filter needs to be changed, but I don’t think it is the source of the problem.
  • Sometimes, even on jump start the engine doesn’t start… maybe too much gas was given and not enough air flow?
Any advice or suggestions would be really welcomed.

Charge the battery for about 5 to 6 hrs, turn off the charger and try it. If it cranks after being charged , let it sit over night, if it doesn't crank have the battery tested on a load tester. Sounds like to me you have a bad battery. These batterys are bad about showing 12 Volts but have NO CCA Cold Cranking Amps. Good luck.

I agree that it sounds like the battery. You can also remove the wires that attach to the battery, clean the contact areas and reinstall to see if the better connection helps any.

I have cleaned the connections and the tractor is now starting well!
I'll test again tomorrow to see if the battery keeps its charge.

Thank you so much for your help
