white smoke
Briggs & Stratton engine 31c707-0154e1 on my riding mower.
Recently it becomes difficult to start the mower. When it is started, lot of white smoke coming out of exhaust. After running for a while, no more smoke and the mower runs fine. After several day, when starting it again, same thing happens. Sometime it won't start, I opened the OHV cover and can start the engine, but see oil and gas spill out of OHV box. Please help.

Your carburetor is leaking fuel into the crankcase. Clean the carb and replace the needle and gaskets between the body and float assembly if it has a nikki carb, then change the gassy oil before running it again.

Thank you! cheese. White smoke comes out of exhaust. People also told me it is due to burning excessive oil. so I guess fuel leaking into the crankcase causes burning oil but don't now why. Could you help explain how it works Thanks again.

Yes, gas is thin, it makes the oil so thin that it gets past the rings and into the combustion chamber. It also makes the oil level too high which allows it to blow through the crankcase breather into the intake manifold where it gets sucked into the combustion chamber and burned.
