We need a model # to get specific. Check for a single wire coming from under the blower housing with a plug on the end that runs into the main harness. That plug will be very near the engine. If you find it is like this unplug it and check for fire. Need a model # and tell us how you are checking for fire at the plug.

Yep, model# please. Briggs had more than one 18.5hp engine, we don't even know if it's one or two cylinders. Generally unplug the kill wire and make sure the gap is set right and if there is no spark the coil is bad or the plug is bad. You are grounding the plug right? The engine is cranking fast, right?

Model number of engine should be on the Valve cover of the engine. 917 number is model number of entire mower. This number will be right in front, may have to wipe off some dirt and grease.

Don't really need the engine model number to know how to bypass the safety switches. What are you trying to accomplish? You can get off without it shutting off if you put the park brake on.

Here is a link from Sears direct and of your model Number. It is of your wiring harness. http://www.searspartsdirect.com/part...dMod=917275642
In the past repairs that I have done I had an issue with the reverse lock out switch, unplug it and see it it will fire. It is under the right rear fender. Good luck.
