I added a starter to my tecumseh generator motor

I added a 12v starter to my Generac generator with a Tecumseh 10hp Hm100. it turns over but my battery cables melt when I crank it. I disconnected the starter wire from the starter and the wires to the battery seamed fine.

That would mean either the battery cables are too small, or the starter is severely shorted/over amping.
