Crankcase filled with gas

Hi All, I took my lawn tractor out of storage as I normally do this time of year I changed the oil before I put it away last fall and filled the gas tank with gas and Stabil as I have always done, when I checked the oil and the crankcase was full of gas,how could this happen?I have drained the CC refilled with fresh oil and installed a shut off valve in the gas line ,engine is now running fine.

Thoughts

Normally when you put gas powered equipment away for the winter you'd want to remove the gas from the tank. At the minimum you'd want to turn the gas supply off and run the fuel out of the carburetor. If you left fuel in the carb then it probably started to evaporate and gel up. The float probably got stuck open and the gas was just draining thru the carb into the cylinder and then into the oil pan.

At least you changed the oil before starting the engine......no damage done.
