I got this mower from a friend who put the wrong oil in it. I drained 5W-30 and added 10W-30. It ran fine it for my whole back yard (bout .40 acres) Turned it off had a beer and I went to start the front yard, and pull cord locked up on me. Is this an oil issue or do I need to take it apart? Please help. I'm really trying to avoid having it looked at this time of year, it could take weeks.
thanks,
Rinku

The pull cord could have jumped off the pulley and wedged inbetween case and pulley. Pull off the recoil housing and see if you can turn engine by hand ,,if not the engine is toast, but if you can then the problem lies in the recoil,,How many beers?? Good luck.

thank you...I'll give it a try after I put my son to sleep. Its not completely locked up so it does turn freely until the first 1/4 of the pull, but no more. I'll let you know what i get. just 2 beers so far.

It sounds like the needle valve hung open and filled the cylinder with gas. If the cylinder is full of gas or oil, it will lock the engine. Try removing the spark plug and move the plug wire way out of the way of the plug hole so that it can't spark and slowly pull the rope to see if it will turn. If gas shoots out, be careful that it doesn't get ignited by the plug wire.
