Craftsman tractor quit running

1998 Carftsman 24hp Kohler 50 in deck, model 917.273220 - mowing lawn as usual, no problems other than the tractor gets noisier each season but runs well. Mowing down slight grade and suddenly feel tractor lose traction - no braking - pushed tractor up to house ( no need to disengage the trany it moves freely) . New drive belt last year. looked under tractor and belt appears in good shape and in all pulleys. jacked wheels up and they rotate freely by hand and in opposite directions. started tractor and released brake , engaged drive belt and it goes thru alll pulleys and idlers but no wheel movement in forward or reverse. Any ideas ?

Check the keys in the axles in case one was able to come out or sheared in two.

Both keys in place.Took trany off. I took the two oil plugs (Allen wrench) off top of input shaft side of trany and I drained oil - I can easily turn input pulley by hand and I can see gears moving inside the trany. Again this is on the top right side of trany where the hose goes to the filter.

it sounds like there might be a part where the axles come out of the tranny and they are causing resistance.

Sounds like an internal failure. Open it up and see. A word of caution: Clean the tranny well and make sure no dirt gets in it. Take it apart on a clean table. Put a layer of newspaper on the table if there is any dirt that might be transferred from the table to a part. Keeping the inside of a hydro clean is paramount.
