Toro 20071 lawnmower - can't get belt pulley off! help!

I have a Toro 20071 lawnmower.
The front wheel drive transmission is gone so I have to replace it.
I took the belt off & am trying to loosen the bolt on the transmission pulley & it won't loosen. The directions say to grip the axle with locking pliers as the bolt on the pulley is turned, but obviously, if the transmission gears are stripped then the axle will just spin away.
Does anyone know how to get the pulley locknut off when the transmission gears are stripped?

 

Hold the pulley with large channel locks and use an impact gun.

 

cheese, I just tried that & the bolt & nut are spinning & the pulley is being held.
There's about 1/8" of bolt showing about the nut. Any ideas how to get it off?

PS: I'm not sure I was clear. I'm holding the pulley so it doesn't spin. when I turn the nut, the bolt is spinning with the nut. so, holding the pulley wheel isn't working. there's nothing to hold below the pulley wheel as there's a plastic sleeve around the bolt.

 

Did you try tightening it? I seem to recall some transmissions having left hand threads on the pulley nut. Even if it has right hand threads, tightening it can sometimes get the nut broken loose when loosening isn't working, and then you can reverse it.

 

I am not familiar with this mower & don't try this until you get some feed back from others... then make it a last resort, but..... if worse comes to worse...

1) if the "bolt" is big enough, &
2) if you have a wire welder handy,
get a bolt or rod of some sort smaller than the nut on the pulley & you might try welding a rod or bolt "to the end" (end to end) of the bolt on the mower. Then you can use another wrench or some thing like vise grips to hold the extended piece (an extension of the bolt) to loosen & remove the nut. Once the nut is loose, use a grinder etc to remove the weld & remove the extension.

Try to make sure the extension is maybe half the size of the bolt on the mower so you will have room to place the weld, then remove the weld without damaging the bolt on the mower.

 

After looking up the diagram of this, its obvious that the bolt isn't big enough to weld to without more than likely damaging it. However, If I understand what your doing, the bolt is made into the transmission which is what your replacing anyway. Whether welding a "T" on the bolt enough to loosen the nut, then using a hack saw to cut that thing off, isn't going to hurt anything, cause your going to replace that anyway with the new transmission.
