Valve Adjustment Settings

Greetings All:
I'm about to adjust the valves on my push mower. It's an OHV B&S. Engine model# is 11P902-2693-B1. The specs call for the adjustmentn range of:

Intake Valve Clearance 0.004 - 0.008 in/Exhaust Valve Clearance 0.004 - 0.008 in.

So if they give a range, how would I figure out what the optimal number is? Also, how do I know which is the intake/exhaust valve, top or bottom. My apologies for the dopey questions.

Well, both of them have the same requirements, so you don't have to determine which is which. Set 'em both to .005" and you're good. If you just have to know which is which, on any engine, look at the exhaust port on the head, the porting of the head, and which valve it goes to. Same with the intake. You can see where the valve is getting air from or sending it to by following the port or just seeing which one is closest to which valve. On most small engines, the intake is the top and the exhaust is the bottom.
