Engine won't start

Hi, I have a 33cc gas scooter. The engine will not stay running. It will start for 5 seconds then die, and will not restart. It is getting good spark, I replaced spark plug also. Sometimes it will start if I throttle it in time it will stay running only at full throttle. When I stop at a stop sign it dies. It seemed like the problem started with hard starting but then working but now it is progressing worse. Please help

When in doubt clean the carburetor. You probably have a jet or passage clogged since you can keep it running if you work the throttle but it will die at idle.

Thanks, but I forgot to mention I recently put a brand new carnet author on it and that did not solve it. Any other suggestions? I'm not really sure what this could be as it runs like a champ at wot.

Sounds like you have an air leak, while it is running, spray/dribble some carb/brake parts cleaner behind the carb and along the crankcase mating surfaces, if the engine tempo changes you have found the leak and can take the appropriate action. Have a good one. Geo

I'm not sure it's an air leak? I don't think it is as it would probably start when choked. Plus if I do get it started as long as I keep the speed above idle it runs great, up until know it died when running at full throttle. Will not restart no matter what I try. I think it's trashed.

Again it has brand new carberator. After new carberator it was working then I had this problem. Could I still need to clean it out? The carb was replaced then it worked for a while now it went downhill and will not restart. Is it trashed? Starting fluid does nothing.

Self propelled walk behind lawnmower Troy-Bilt Lawnmower with Briggs & Stratton Engine Engine number 124T02-0464-E1 06092859 Hi everyone, I'm a new homeowner and am quickly delving into many things DIY. I'm new to the forum. I have owned the above lawnmower for a little over a year, my in-laws gave it to me, at that time the belt for the "self propelled" part of it had broken, I replaced the belt, changed the oil, replaced the spark plug, air filter, and it worked great last summer. Last fall it started to have trouble starting and running. I rebuilt the carburetor and it seemed to fix just about everything. I moved this summer and added fresh gas to it, and now it barely starts and then cuts out. I will prime it, and it will start after 3-4 pulls, run very rough, so rough that the whole lawnmower kind of rocks back and forth, it will put out little bit of black smoke and then cut off after a total of about 4-5 seconds. I have since, completely replaced the carburetor, spark plug and air filter again. It is not runing any better. I tried a bottle of "Start Your Engines" from HD, but it didn't do anything. At this point, the gas in it is now a little over a month old. Both the old and the new spark plugs if I remove them smell a little bit like gas. I have been borrowing a friends lawnmower, but would really like to get this one running. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My sources for parts for my Troy Bilt model 47282 have all but dried up. Sears parts on line still has a few, plus some great parts diagrams. But.... when I took the rotor assembly off to replace the chipper blade the bushing that goes between the keyed shaft and the rotor assembly and fits into the shaft shield was unwound and destroyed. The parts diagram does not list this part, and sears "Expert" on line help contacted MTD and they never heard of a part that went in this location. It is made up of either heavy nylon or light gauge steel wrapping on a metal base 2 3/8" in diameter 5/8" thick. Has anyone come across this while working on their machines? On the new chipper vacs the rotor assembly is now called the Impeller Assembly-shredder, but this part is not listed on the parts diagram either.
