Stuck starter

I've got a 2002 Murray lawn tractor, model 465623x00A with a Tecumseh four cycle twin cylinder engine. Last weekend, my son was mowing, and he came running up the hill; had to disconnect the battery because the starter would not disengage.

have I got a bad relay or solenoid?

Why did he disconnect the battery? Was the starter running with the key in the off position?

It would be either the switch is stuck on internally or the solenoid froze shut. Disconnect the small wire from the solenoid and see if the starter still runs. If it does, replace the solenoid.

If it doesn't check the small wire for current with the switch off. If you have current the switch is likely bad.
